Joel, were rolling out a new wine list next week at Vinology...complete with vintages listed. If you get a chance, shoot me an email - I'd love to grab a glass of wine and review it with you.

great summary. In my opinion though
the Earle list can not be beat for depth, breadth, price or value.

Eve's glass list is good but pricey. Four people having a glass could easily
spend less for any one of 50 wines by the bottle at the Earle. I doubt 4 people
could go to Eve on any night and be guaranteed a seat; be comfortable; and not
have to spend $100.

I laughed out loud when I read your Melange service notes. I went there once
and had a similarly annoying experience. And by "annoying" I mean:
so pissed that I talked to the manager about it and have NEVER been back.
The dull rubbery "steak" was only the last straw. No concept of service would be the first.

Excellent reviews. I agree with your assessments of all 3 that I've tried... and I'm glad that I've never bothered with Melange!

We're very pleased to read the favorable review above about Vinology. The feedback on the wine list is both welcome, and accurate. Regarding vintages, you're absolutely correct. The wine menu is large enough and complicated enough that it requires nearly constant updating even without vintages. But we're putting in a new system that links our inventory entries with our printed wine list so we can run them on the fly. With that, we should be able to include vintages to serve our more discerning customers.

I've experienced the same goofy computer issue at Melange. The computer was "fast", and despite everyone at the table pointing to watches and cellphones, the waitress claimed that nothing could be done and that we'd have to pay full price. It wasn't worth quibbling over so we let it go, but, really, there's no way for the bartender or a manager to override the computer?

To clarify slightly, none of us in fact had a watch on at Melange. We actually checked our relatively infallible timekeeping devices - our cellphones.

I'd also say that the reviewer has been very forgiving in describing the food at Melange. Suffice it to say there was food left on both plates.

Finally, the Pinot Noir in particular was not age damaged, but it was nevertheless made from that rare element, undrinkium...Blech. We sent it back for good, and to the staff's credit they brought a substitute without objecion.
