In his On Religion column, Samuel Freedman of the New York Times writes about Stephen Ranzini of University Bank in Ann Arbor and the bank’s decision to specialize in Islamic finance. Says Ranzini: “I never thought I’d be involved in Islamic banking because I’d never even heard of it. And it’s been a stretch to learn it, succeed at it and make it work.
