Does the University really plan to deal with the “tax problem?” While the planned activities at the old Pfizer site will surely generate needed jobs specific to the plant as well as those jobs that will result in support of workers there, these will not make up for lost property taxes. Both the city and the county have suffered loss of tax revenue as a result of the plant leaving the public tax roles.

If Dr. Cantor has any thoughts on a remedy for lost revenues to local governments, I would love to hear them. As a county commissioner I am truly afraid of the human consequences of all the losses of revenue, both state and local that we are facing.

Suffice it to say that I believe that the State of Michigan must move from a property tax revenue base to that of a progressive graduated income tax. If we did this, the purchase of the former Pfizer property by the university would only portend for good.
