As a member of the MeLCat staff, it was great to read an acknowledgement of how much the users of AADL value this service. I was, however, quite surprised by the statement that
"about three libraries in the state, including AADL, are shouldering the load for MeLCat in terms of providing materials..."

MeLCat uses a request balancing system that attempts to put demands on libraries equivalent to those that they themselves place on other libraries in the system. We consider a library to be "in balance" if the ratio of materials loaned to materials borrowed is between .8 and 1.2.

We are not always successful in achieving that balance, but AADL has been one of our success stories -- the AADL ratio is almost always hovering right around 1. (In 2009 to date, the ratio is 1.06; for the 17 months between January 2008 and May 2009, the ratio was 1.09.)

As Director Parker stated, AADL is the single largest borrower on the MeLCat system. It is by design that AADL is also the largest lender.

All State budget complaints should be addressed to State Senator Mike Bishop office # 517-373-2417 (they do not make it too easy to get these #'s.) He is the person most individually responsible (but certainly not alone!) for the State's inability to address key fiscal issues.
