David,

Description done well is a rare thing, and a great public service. The Chron is, therefore, a rare publication that performs great public service. Here's hoping you can keep the Small Potatoes feel as you grow.

I enjoyed learning that there was a Chronicle in 1882.

Wystan,

Thanks too for the tip. I ordered the book online and its on the way!

And I am thinking A2 Chronicle is more like...fingerling potatos. Whereas A2 dot com is more like McDonald's fries.

Two things come to mind:
(1) The Chronicle's modesty is refreshing. We may be getting "small potatoes," but we're getting them! We're not being promised the meal of the future . . . someday.
(2) The Chronicle's consistency is especially reassuring during these turbulent times. Of course I have my likes and dislikes, but I know where to find things, and the links work!

Remember - the little potatoes are the tasty ones. Ohhh...creamed peas and new potatoes. Delightful ! What a treat.

For more flavor, crisp the small ones slightly in hot butter in a skillet before steaming. Don't burn the butter by getting too anxious with the heat !

Then steam in a veggie pot until almost tender through, add fresh peas, steam one to two minutes longer until water is just about evaporated, lower heat, and add a warm cream and whole milk until almost covered. (50/50 - depending on the amount of water left. More water means less milk in the mix. All cream is too rich.)

Leave on the now lower heat until cream sauce is warm through. Pepper and salt to taste (potatoes will require more salt than you think). Easy on any stirring action or you'll break the spuds too much. Easy does it.

Feast ! Mashing the small spuds slightly with a fork on your plate and folding the pea/sauce back in is just about the best of late summer.

Lucky you !

Wystan [#5] – Thanks for pointing out that resource. As of a couple of weeks ago, Antelope Antiques (255 E. Liberty) also had a copy of the book for sale.

Louis W. Doll wrote the book on Ann Arbor's journalistic history, to wit: "A History of the Newspapers of Ann Arbor" (Paperback, Wayne State University Press, 1959). Available at the Ann Arbor Library, and for sale on Amazon. An excellent source for other kinds of local history, as well. A pleasure to read.

At least you haven't become a giant zucchini. From the complaints, the A2Journal is in more danger of becoming that.

Such a rich article, Dave. As usual, you manage to concentrate so much information onto these pages (pages, is still correct?) Right now, I'd have to equate the Ann Arbor Chronicle to a rich potato leek soup. Much flavor, much substance and much warmth!
