There is indeed one meter remaining next to the library on William. All of the rest of the meters are hooded. So we have one handicapped space for the patrons of the Downtown Library? Eschh! Not enough to make me think anyone in our fair city really cares. Yes, there are branches of the library, but many of us would have to drive to them, and they do not have free magazines or the Friends book sale (I don’t believe).

It shows one or two handicapped spaces on William right next to the library. The next nearest are in the structure at 4th and William, and on Liberty in the middle of the block between 5th and Division.

Fortunately I live near one of the library branches and have recently discovered the convenience of ordering items on-line for pickup at the branch. I receive an e-mail when it is ready for pickup. It is then a 5 minute bike ride or a slightly longer walk to the branch to pick up the item(s). This has eliminated my trips to the main branch except for attendance at cultural events held inside the library.

There is no accommodation made for handicapped or otherwise disabled people. It is, “Cross here, then here, then back over there.” I tried walking from Bank of Ann Arbor to the library and Earthen Jar — phooey! I had to be helped through the fences by a construction worker who told me it was a one time only event. Next time, he said, he would “have to shoot me.” On the way back, I had to walk blocks out of my way. The Old Y lot does not offer free parking to handicapped people either as do other lots. Come on someone. Show us you care.
