If you recall, we had warnings of 80 mile-an-hour winds sweeping through the county, and the Dept. of Emergency Management had sent out a warning to stay home. Luckily, that ferocious speed of winds did not materialize, but better safe that sorry! We will be having our regular November meeting on the 17th (it is a week early due to the Thanksgiving holiday) at 1 P.M. at the LRC at the Hogback Service Center. I did call some of the regular participants, such as Luann Bullington, to tell her not to come. She offered to get in touch with others.

It seems everyone wants their pet group recognized as such (see Wikipedia for a bunch of claimants). But for me it will always mean the beloved underground paper Harvey Ovshinsky started in 1965 in Detroit (and still going!). It’s right up there with Creem as local formative influences on me.

I was not familiar with the ‘Fifth Estate’ you referenced so I looked it up. It also caused me to remember a similar reference, ‘Fifth Business’ which is the title of a book by Robertson Davies. Davies describes Fifth Business as the following:

“Those roles which, being neither those of Hero nor Heroine, Confidante nor Villain, but which were none the less essential to bring about the Recognition or the denouement were called the Fifth Business in drama and Opera companies organized according to the old style; the player who acted these parts was often referred to as Fifth Business.”

It’s a novel from 1970; the first book of the Deptford Trilogy. I always enjoyed this definition (which I understand was invented by Davies) and thought you might enjoy it too. Similar to Fifth Business there must more than clergy, (First Estate), the nobility (Second Estate), the commoners (Third Estate), and the press (Fourth Estate).

The Urban County meeting was canceled last week. As far as I know, no replacement meeting was scheduled. So I think Urban County will take up the issue at their regular November meeting.

Now come back to be our obstinate ones.

Will there be a report on last week’s Urban County meeting or was that a casualty of scheduling? There is an important item regarding the coordinated funding issue on this week’s Council meeting agenda and it would be nice to hear what was said at the UC.
