I wonder what the ratio of girls to boys is though?

[link]

And in my own analysis (found at my blog, Ann Arbor Schools Musings–Athletics in AAPS: Safety, Title IX, Process [link]) I am embarrassed to say that I missed this other potential violation regarding club sports that the Title IX blog notes:

“…several sports are being demoted to “club” status, meaning they receive no school district funding. 7 girls sports will be affected by this new status at one or more of the three schools: lacrosse, bowling, J.V. field hockey, figure skating, cheer, dance, and crew. Only 3 boys sports will be: lacrosse, bowling, and crew. It is highly unlikely — impossible I think would be fair to say — that a school district that exempts football from freshmen cuts, and then takes out more girls’ teams than boys’ sports still manages to provide athletic opportunities proportionate to the gender ratio of the student body.”

Do they mean equivalent cuts by school? on a per-student basis? on a per-student-athlete basis? Which of these is really the most equitable?

I’d also like the school board to look closely at whether these cuts are discriminatory in a Title IX sense. Just last week, 60 schools in Oregon were named in a complaint through the Office of Civil Rights (federal) for not providing equitable numbers of sports opportunities for girls compared to boys. The proposal a) cuts more girls’ sports than boys’ sports and b) leaves as the only freshman sport football, which is a boy’s sport.

Last, I’ve been told that there are two athletic directors (at Pioneer and Huron) and one athletic coordinator (at Skyline). The AD positions are equivalent in rank to an assistant principal, and are part of the administrators’ union. The coordinator position is a lower level position.
