He also took issue with the approach of current water resources commissioner Janis Bobrin, saying he’d heard “horror stories” from some farmers who think there’s a plot to push them off their land.”

Over-regulating? Hardly. When the Ann Arbor had an oil spill (or phosphoric acid spill depending on which report you read) into the Huron River, and it required a lot of work from the AAFD…. the EPA and the DNR looked the other way and never investigated it, as they gave control to the UofM Department of Public Safety to solve it — which they were unable to solve, even though it would run through their own territory (the cause is unknown and the source is still unknown). One of the key people involved in that failed investigation (as it is still unsolved) would leave UofM and join Bobrin by her side. Bobrin is a fantastic person, I met her in person and so my comments aren’t against her as a person, but against policies. For example, farmers might be pressured to remove phosphors from their products, but let the farmers know that when Ann Arbor had an 88% confidence Phosphoric Acid spill (I read it is 88% Phosphoric Acid on a AAFD computer)… then no one was able to solve the spill that ran in front of the university police for hours and covered the Huron River. No one was charged, and someone was able to cover the river for hours, from the UofM hospital parking lot outfall to Gallup Park. Enforcement might be good at going after farmers, but when it occurs in Ann Arbor itself — they still have one unsolved case that happened on Bobrin’s watch. Yes, Scheie, during Bobrin’s time there was an unsolved spill in Ann Arbor. Read the Ann Arbor fire department report.

Whoever gets her job, must take spills much more seriously, and pursue the illegal dumping with vigor.

When a spill happens then they must bring in the DNR/EPA and appropriate authorities. When a spill happens through UofM grounds, outside specialists on chemicals must be brought in and not just a UofM police officer with limited knowledge of chemicals. When a spill happens, they must notify the public and let them know that one occurred (the public was not notified) — the public can then decide for themselves if they want to let their kids play in it and let their dogs drink it.

And don’t get me started on dioxane (no mention of it in here?).
Someone get a hold of that database and lets see what is in those wells. And if someone can answer this question — where is that database? — it should be made public and not hidden.

I don’t have much fondness for Scheie, but he’s correct that the landscape of County Farm Park, or at least part of it, has changed drastically. I’m curious what plans there are, if any, for restoration or remediation. Is that on line anywhere?

In 2012 it’s $101,528. If you’re curious about all county position salaries I’ve uploaded the .xls to The Goog: [Google Spreadsheet of 2012 Washtenaw County salary report]
