Argo Cascades

Stopped. Watched. icon

At this moment (10:45 a.m. on Tuesday) a very long flatbed truck is being backed into the Swift Street side of Argo Cascades to unload some gigantic boulders. Another flatbed truck with a railroad tank car sized tube is awaiting its turn. This must be part of the Edison remediation of the property on the other side and the construction of exciting water features in the river.

    I thought the “exciting water features” had been postponed by EPA/DNRE – is it on again?

    I did notice the water flow through Cascades was really low last Friday – wondered if it was an intentional diversion.

    I queried the city’s parks staff and got this email from parks & rec manager Colin Smith:

    The permit application for the Broadway Site/Huron River Whitewater Features was withdrawn on November 9th, prior to the 90 day time period expiring. City staff met with MDEQ and MDNR in November and found the meeting productive. We agreed to work collaboratively to attempt to come up with an alternative design that would satisfy all parties and address EPA’s concerns. City staff are looking at some other features that might be more likely to be permitted that would still provide whitewater recreational amenities.
