I used to live near that bridge. It was mostly rental trucks driven by amateurs that would collide with it. Pretty rare for a professional driver to make that mistake.
However, the most famous accident was May 21, 1971, when Scotty Asheton drove the Stooges van into the bridge. (Getcher Stooges tour of Ann Arbor map here.)

The Stooges tour map is interesting, but has at least one error: The Stooges lived in Tower Plaza on E. William, not Wolverine Towers. Biff’s was across the street at E. William and Thompson. Friends of mine worked the midnight shift at Biff’s, which was open 24 hours, and the Stooges used to hang out there.
I wondered about that. I’ve always heard Iggy lived in Wolverine Towers, which was definitely more downscale than Tower Plaza, but it wasn’t across from Biff’s, you’re right. (I was just wondering the other day whether anyone remembered Biff’s–and there were two of them, right? One at Washington and State?)
That Google Stooges tour site mentions the Goose Lake Festival being “disastrous.” What was disastrous about it? I only ever heard that it was great. [link]
It was a disaster for the Stooges, anyway. Dave Alexander freaked out and forgot how to play the songs, and Iggy fired him. Otherwise, I dunno.

#7: Hopefully that film will alert people to another, relatively little-known Ann Arbor musical genius, Deniz Tek, one of the coolest people in the entire world.
Ed: as I said above, there were two Biff’s. The other was in the building which became Olga’s later, where Buffalo Wild Wings is now. Maybe Poppy’s differentiated them?
(I swear this is true, but I can find little or no trace of Biff’s on the net. Googling leads to this post, unrelated restaurants or Arthur Miller. But there was a Biff’s in Birmingham, one in Troy and two in Ann Arbor, and probably others. (Not the same chain as the larger Biff Burger, I don’t think). Am I imagining all this?)
