I never imagined that was possible, Jim Rees, but what a great idea—that only work that genuinely requires the sidewalk (ie they’re digging up the sidewalk) gets a pass. No idea if it’s feasible in every case, but it’s a great notion as a default. The situation on Washington was so horrible for so long.

Prohibiting sidewalk closures for construction is on my “top three” list for the pedestrian task force. The NYC building code prohibits these closures, we should too.

I’ve sent a note to the city about the S Fourth Ave sidewalk blockage (where Eastern Accents used to be across from Aunt Agatha’s). That walk has been closed a lot for a long time with no visible signs of progress.

May I rather immodestly report that I had written to the folks at City Hall with a “constructive” complaint about the extremely long time (longer than many moons) that the sidewalk was either completely nonexistent or “under construction” and was told that, yes, they were concerned about the delay as well and that the walk would be completed by Art Fair. I was there at the very minute that the final fencing was removed, and I noted that the sidewalk was almost immediately full of people–as if it had been there forever.
