Whoever left this artifact behind would definitely be singing in the subjunctive mood:
I’d hammer out danger,
I’d hammer out a warning,
I’d hammer out love between,
My brothers and my sisters,
All over this land.

A couple of days ago I saw an Edison truck with emergency lights flashing pull up on the median across the street from Aldi’s. A guy got out, and was banging on the lamp post base with a hand sledge like that.
An odd way of making repairs (or deliberately damaging municipal equipment to quicken replacements?) Sort of like kicking a balky computer.
He may have been working his way east along Dexter and Huron from there, and got distracted to lose it. A nice $15 hammer with a fiberglass handle, very good for breaking stuff.
Maybe the song should be “Bang! Bang! Maxwell’s Silver Hammer”?
