Industrial-sized dumpster in front of the former gas station. Looks like the building may be preparing for major renovation/demolition? Something is afoot! [According to Anna Ercoli Schnitzer in a previous S.W. item, the future of the building is as a store to sell local vegetables.]

Skies Over Old West Side

A B-25 Mitchell medium bomber flew over the Old West Side. It buzzed our house fairly low, then made a second pass! Quite exciting! It’s from the Yankee Air Museum collection and it’s one of only two B-25 C/D aircraft still flying. [image] [reference]

I can always tell the sound of the old birds when they are out flying around. It’s very distinctive and you can tell the difference between it and the B-17G or the C-47 Skytrain’s engines.

Huron & Main

Wondered what was holding traffic up on Huron, just west of Main this afternoon. Amazed at what I saw next.

A very old man (at least 80, by appearances) with a yellow shirt, khaki pants and suspenders, with a walker, was dragging bag of returnables with his back to traffic crossing Huron in the middle of the block, while moving at a tortoise’s pace.

Vehicle ahead of me pulls over, young man getting out to assist. I stopped, put my flashers on and waved at cars in next lane to yield.

He made it to the north side of Huron in one piece! No injuries, everybody breathed a sigh of relief!

The new sign for the Beer Depot is up and lit! It actually is good to see it back in service, looking all spruced up versus the character it had with the rust of the old sign. Definitely represents the character of that part of town! Yay!

Two luminaires, one rising minutes after the other one, moving west through the calm, clear night sky, til they extinguished themselves, over the Old West Side on Fourth Street about 11 p.m. Maybe launched from the Diag?

A group of youths at the downtown city bus station, listening to the pratter of a confidence man as he bilks them with the shell game. A couple of old timers look on, amused, but letting the short con go on. Oldest hustle in the book. But as P.T. Barnum said, “(one) is born every day!”
