Snow plow spreading salt and a shower of sparks – a pretty noisy and dramatic night time sighting. The plow was trying to plow a street lacking snow, going first east then west. That can’t be good for the blade or the street, but nothing caught on fire at least. About 10 p.m.

Two happy kayakers, lovely sunset, nearly full moon and a great blue heron all visible along the new path for the canoe portage. Very exciting to see the kayakers out playing in the new rapids. Perfect evening and place for kayaking in January!

The bridge walkway is finished for the fountain. Already many people are detouring to enjoy the alternate to the sidewalk close to Huron St. traffic, even without the running water. The photo is looking west [photo]. Spoke with the project manager who said the last tweaking will be done in about two weeks and the fountain and lights will be on.

Rackham Auditorium. With flawless technology, Aung San Suu Kyi speaks to a nearly full house via pre-recorded video and then was Skyped live to answer questions read by University of Michigan students. She received the Wallenberg medal in abstentia as she would be unable to leave Burma and return safely. [The Wallenberg medal awarded by UM to outstanding humanitarians. It's named for Raoul Wallenberg who rescued thousands of Jews in Budapest as World War II came to an end. ] Lovely and inspiring evening. [photo]
