Chronicle Comments Policy

Our challenge to commenters is: Be Generous. Be generous with your information and good humor. Be generous with your time and effort. Be generous with your respect.

Our challenge to ourselves at The Chronicle is: Be Open. We’ll be open to differing viewpoints. We’ll be open to the possibility we’re wrong. We’ll be open to suggestions.

Technical details: To comment you must login by supplying a name and email address (never published). The name you choose can, for any reason at all, be different from your real name – just pick one and stick to it. Your first comment ever will be held for moderation. On approval of your first comment, your subsequent comments will appear without requiring approval. Note that not every Chronicle article will have Comments enabled. But Comments for any article can be enabled on request.

Sufficient reasons for removal of a comment and/or suspension of commenting privileges: writing something that is slanderous, in poor taste, off-topic, gratuitously profane, or extraordinarily boring; making a personal attack on another commenter that is not relevant to the merits of that commenter’s contribution; commenting in a manner that we deem inappropriate in any way.

Additionally, we reserve the right to remove a comment that is inappropriate for a reason we haven’t written here.
