Ann Arbor Library Board OKs Budget

Ann Arbor District Library board meeting (May 18, 2009): A new budget, a new agreement with the Friends of the Ann Arbor District Library, an upcoming documentary on the building of the Traverwood branch and a broken freight elevator were all items of discussion at Monday’s AADL board meeting. As discussed at their April meeting, the board voted to lower the tax rate that the library levies, citing the struggling economy and a desire to keep taxes as low as possible. Economic conditions were also the reason for keeping AADL director Josie Parker’s salary unchanged, though the board commended her performance as part of her annual review. [Full Story]

As the Ann Arbor District Library moves forward on its ambitious project to raze the downtown building and put up a new library on the Fifth & William site, a nonprofit that supports the AADL ponders its own future.

Friends of the Ann Arbor District Library, or FAADL, is best known for the shop it runs on weekends in the basement of the downtown library, raising money to support the AADL. The group has built a real sense of community there, with long-time volunteers and regular shoppers greeting each other by name as they staff the cashier table or browse the shelves, boxes and tables full of books, DVDs and other materials. The Detroit Free Press looks at a dispute between state legislators and the boards that manage Detroit’s two public pension funds. Lawmakers have introduced bills to bring the pension funds under the control of a Lansing-based nonprofit trust, the Municipal Employees’ Retirement System. The article quotes Bob Stevenson, an Ann Arbor-based pension attorney, who says the Bing administration should restructure the existing boards: “Undoubtedly, the Detroit pension systems have been poorly run, but I don’t think the answer in my view would be to transition to MERS. I would find some means to keep these pension plans autonomous.” [Source]

The Eat Close to Home blog puts out a call for volunteers for Avalon Housing’s Edible Avalon project: “Edible Avalon is a great group that’s not only helping to build gardens in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area, they are teaching people how to garden and supporting them through their first gardening efforts. It’s Called “Ann Arbor Open School @ Mack”
In a recent report on an AAPS board meeting, we paraphrased remarks of participants, and we employed the informal nomenclature of the speakers for “Ann Arbor Open School @ Mack.” Those variants were departures from the accepted standard shortening to “Ann Arbor Open.” We acknowledge the name of the school here, and have cleaned up references to it in the original piece.
