Ann Arbor Chronicle content is all freely accessible. However, what we “sell” to readers and to advertisers is The Chronicle’s unique journalistic approach to civic and community affairs. That approach is summed up in one of our taglines: “It’s like being there.” There are many ways to read Chronicle stories besides visiting the website.

We’d like readers to “buy” the Chronicle’s style of journalism by voluntarily subscribing.

Checks can be made out to The Ann Arbor Chronicle and mailed to The Ann Arbor Chronicle, 330 Mulholland Ave., Ann Arbor, MI 48103. Online donations can be made via credit card using PayPal (it is not necessary to create a PayPal account to use the interface)

If you’d prefer to “subscribe” by having your credit card billed each month for $10, use the “Subscription” button.

The “Donate” button allows you specify an amount of your choosing for a one-time payment.

The limit we’ve established is somewhat less than that associated with local political campaigns, reasoning (i) that it is healthier to operate a publication with support from a broad collection of individuals at reasonable levels, than it would be to allow contributions of tens of thousands of dollars from a single individual and (ii) it’s the same order of magnitude as what a subscription to a printed publication would cost.

We’ve elected to list out contributions by default because we want our financial interests to be as transparent as possible – and because several people have expressed that they want to be counted publicly by name as supporters of the Chronicle. Although initially, the listing of a contributor’s name was mandatory, we’ve been persuaded that the metaphor of “subscription” should prevail over that of a political campaign. Newspapers don’t list out their subscribers. Contributors’ names now appear by default, but they can opt out of the listing. More consistent with subscription rates of printed publications, we’ve also ratcheted down the maximum donation in one year to $250.

By dating the contributions, we’re recognizing that some donors might at some time in the future – even the near future – come to regret their association with our publication. We’d hope this would never be the case, but we don’t take for granted that we’ll continue to enjoy everyone’s continued support no matter what we do. A long-ago contribution, we think, would be assessed in a more accurate light by readers, than an undated amalgam of everyone who has ever contributed anything.
