Love newsprint, dislike on-line reading

I prefer what The Chron does to conventional editorializing. Chron writing is thoughtful, as are most of the comments of its readers – even those with whom I disagree. Tough to get ongoing commentaries in a print edition, though. Perhaps I would still read online articles on controversial, editorial-worth subjects, but read the comics when they show up in my driveway.

If you kept costs to a minimum, did not have the high overhead and did not have to send most of the profit to the Newhouse family, you could publish a traditional print edition. I would pay $5.00 a week for this. Many advertisers have nowhere to go. You have most of the editorial work down. Someone should run the numbers.

A newspaper is crucial to democracy, but it all depends on how the public participates. Really good moderation (including articles like this) is needed, because it can make the difference between an open public debate and a lynch mob. I’ve seen the online lynch mob elsewhere.

Newspapers, in general, need to work harder to help readers understand why the paper does what it does. And they need to show readers how to participate.

I’m at a loss to explain the underlying political positions supporting local civic actions. Nevertheless, I am aware of these actions because of the outstanding coverage I’ve seen in these electronic pages.

Now, if HD could just channel Mike Royko from the great beyond once in a while we’d have the perfect local outlet.
