As a coach’s spouse (multiple sports and grades), I know part of the hassles you went through in this position. And for what it’s worth, that “force play” thing is just hard at this age. It doesn’t help that they play a different position every inning, and thus don’t have a good chance to learn the special tricks for any given one.
