It was remarkable how much variety in color, texture and flavor that was available. Looking forward to learning more from Mr. Held.

Tomatoes are a great place to start because the fruit and the seed come at the same time. Other fruiting plants like pumpkin, squash and even potatoes are good to save for seed.

Other plants that I tried to let “go to seed’ for seed saving like broccoli, mustard, fennel, and various greens take forever to grow to get to the “seed stage,” which took up too much space in the garden for me.

Spinach and cilantro are good to try and get seeds from because they tend to go to seed all by themselves.

I was so excited to read about some types I had never heard of like Manx Marvel. I’m a tomato junky and will have to track Royer down to do some seed swapping!

I learned a ton about tomatoes and gardening and seed saving. As a result of meeting with him and working with him, I started my own seed collection and recently crossed a cucumber and created a new yellow variety. It was an accident, but because of Royer, I saved the seeds and started new plants the following year.

Marcella is awesome too…the both of them deserve tons of kudos.

Excellent article.

I’ve taken several of Royer’s classes (potatoes, tomato seeds) and think he is a community treasure. Learn from him while we can!
