I hope the burning Twinkie photo doesn’t start an urban legend. In Gail Collins’ new book about the feminist movement, she points out that a journalist once equated the feminists to men who burned their draft cards and that launched the colorful but incorrect legend of bra-burning feminists.

Ha ha! My recollection is that the street corner listed wasn’t quite accurate (or else she’d strayed from her post). So I did ask her before leaving my comment. But I was pretty sure even before I checked. The other crossing guard is a very cute boy, and that exchange perfectly captured their fifth-grade banter. Plus, of course, I know she doesn’t eat Twinkies. Perhaps if they were soaked in rum…

The Ann Arbor Cube is called "Endover". [Link] There is a matching one at Astor Place in NYC called "Alamo". I once took a trip that started at the Michigan Union and ended emerging from from the subway at Astor Place. It was odd to see the same sculpture at the beginning and ending of my journey.

Recall that in the movie Wall-E, when virtually all organic material remaining on Earth appears to have decomposed, Twinkies appear to have survived unchanged. We’ll have to hope that the Chronicle shows a similar longevity.
