I have been following Zak’s Blog closely from the beginning, and have enjoyed the whole process. Having this article in the Ann Arbor Chronicle is like icing on the cake.
Unfortunately Zak was unable to attend the conference due to the Volcanic Ash from Iceland, however his Blog has a clever solution to the problem! American Ingenuity!!!

Crawford Fri, 16 Apr 2010 21:54:06 +0000 http://annarborchronicle.com/?p=41098#comment-43544 Gregg Alf is one of the finest luthiers in the world. He, all by himself makes Ann Arbor a violin making hot spot! I have known the Alf family for many years and Gregg is a man whom I have found to be unsurpassed in his skills, attention to detail and mastery in creating beautiful sounding violins.

If he approves of Zak’s work, then you know that his work is superfluous and that he takes his training seriously. Gregg settles for nothing less than perfection. I am happy to see this article, Gregg Alf is one of the hidden jewels of this community.

Congratulations to you both and hope your ventures to China an Norway are successful. The artistic talen of the Ann Arbor Community is represented in this story. We are enjoying reading of this success here in Tucson, Arizona an expect more out of this beginning adventure.

I am very impressed and happy for you. As a bluegrass multi-instrumentalist having taken up the fiddle as the my most recent instrumental endeavor, I have come to think of the violin as the most perfectly designed and expressive instrument.

When I visited several years ago, it was a bargain–have a wonderful time, Zak & Shel, & congrats!

In sort of related news, the A2 Mech Shop (which you’ve mentioned before here) has an artist in residence program, and the new AIR is Ann Arbor sculptor and violin restorer Sharon Que [Link]. Is Ann Arbor a violin-making hot spot?
