Separately, municipalities can pay for their own dedicated sheriff’s deputies – those “contract” deputies then work in that particular jurisdiction. For example, Ypsilanti Township – which doesn’t have its own police force – pays for 31 contract deputies.

If a situation calls for additional response, the general fund deputies might also be deployed to jurisdictions that have contract deputies, just as officers from other agencies – like police/public safety departments in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Saline or Pittsfield Township – respond when needed outside of their jurisdictions.
