I suppose they weigh around 50 pounds? So I could slide it and it seemed unlikely I would make things worse by trying. There were two men who watched me do it, from a distance. Thanks for mentioning that Dave. I believe an open man hole dropping to a fast rushing stream is a real danger. I need to put the non-emergency number on my Droid.

A guy I ran into at the park said this happens all the time – man hole covers blowing off. I don’t know if that is true, but if this is a normal event that seems unacceptably dangerous.
