Rumors are flying.

Does anyone know what if anything at all is being done to recoup this $8,000.00 in unreimbursed overpayments?

There’s no reason to suppose that there’s not a third thing (e.g., increases in income or education levels, secularization, more women in the work force, or simply women asserting more control over their reproductive choices, among many possibilities) that is a causal factor for both contraception and abortion.

Thanks Mary!

Your facts are off since you didn’t attend the meeting. We presented many about Planned Parenthood, some of which follow. Abortion accounts for about 20% of its clinic income. PP of Mid and South Michigan commmitted 2300 abortions in 2009, most of them at the AA abortion clinic on Professional Dr (and the most by far over any other entity in the county). Their clinic income is $5.8 million so 2300 x $450 (average cost of abortion) = $1 million. The bulk of the rest of their clinic income comes from contraception. And since contraception leads to more abortions, PP will push contraception and sex at our schools and organizations that deal with kids. From PP’s research group, the Guttmacher Institute, 40% of abortions occur after failed pregnancies. This is PP’s model, offer sex ed at our schools and explain everything there is to know about sex on their website, play down the increasing problem of STD’s and STI’s and be there to offer contraception and abortion to reap in the money. Why else would PPMSM have sex ed program that brings in only $3000-4000 per year? To increase their clients.

Some other interesting facts: PPMSM has loads of money in the bank and coming in from grants. Has received $7 million in Title X money in 2011; has over $1 million in savings and cash; has $3.3 million in stocks and bonds; their $11 million revenues for 2009 is unreal for a nonprofit. We showed that PPMSM has, by far, more money that any other non-profit the county is funding. Why not defund PP so that other well deserving non-profits can get money to fund their programs. Many non-profits were turned away from the county and city’s grant money. In fact, the prenatal care grant received in 2009 amounted to only 0.5% of PPMSM’s budget ($60K/$11 million). Clearly, our County commissioners has PPMSM as a pet project to fund. Some board members have even threatened to cut funding to Faith-based organizations if PPMSM defunding is pursued. Not good government to blackmail.

Sorry to ramble, but finally, yes, contraception does increase abortions. Look at the history in every country, including ours, which has introduced contraception. As contraception is introduced and increased, so follows abortion.

I was not at the meeting, but normally those folks argue against PP because it terminates pregnancy. Of course, terminations account for a *very* small (I think it’s like 3%) of the total operating budget of PP; the other services range from women’s health care to birth control. (Now I’m pretty smart but I could be wrong about this…doesn’t birth control PREVENT the need for a pregnancy termination? Hmmm….)
