Well if the buds are killed by the freezing night temperatures, I guess I’ll find out the answer soon. But the reddish bark still seems more like willow than magnolia. But my expertise is in weeds, medicinal plants, and especially not with IDing winter trees. I find that very chalenging except for the very obvious ones.

So I think it is one of the many types of willows, I don’t know which. Magnolia buds are normally much larger in my experience, and not fuzzy. But someone who knows trees better than I do could go and verify.
