My friends and neighbors were pretty good gatherers – we got blackberries and huckleberries out in the fields and cracked and picked hickory nuts and black walnuts. And of course pokeweed (“poke salad”) in the spring. But we never ate mulberries. The “rural legend” was that they had worms, and were nasty.
