I like the fountains and the garden too. It looks silly from the street, but from the walkways around it, I think it works. I imagine that it’s not safe for the fountain to have water in it when there’s a danger of freezing.

I actually love this fountain, and the plantings and gardens that it is connected to. There are two serious faults, I find. One is that traffic noise interferes with the noise of the water. A wall between it and Huron or some different placement may have decreased that – or changing the solid brick wall across the street that reflects more noise to the plaza. The second is that it spends so much time dry. And that there is never an explanation for it. If it is because of lack of water,then the parameters were set too stringently. We have had plenty of water this week, there is no drought. I visit it often, it is even a great walking destination. But I am mostly disappointed when it isn’t being a fountain at all.

I like the idea of a graduated cylinder. Perhaps it could be programmed so that the level rises and falls with the city reserve fund or other useful metric.

LDF, if the goal of the piece of public art were to integrate it fully into the academic calendar while maintaining the nexus to a water them, we would have done some thing safe and pedestrian, like construct a giant, graduated cylinder.
