I found a pile of purple aquarium gravel next to the pond a year or two ago. I was surprised that they survived the winter, but the pond has some groundwater seeps that may have kept it thawed enough for them to persist.

Once in a while a great blue heron comes and eats a few before people and dogs scare it away, and I’ve seen a kingfisher around the pond this year.
