Approximately 60-70 people lined up for service at noon at Blank Slate Creamery’s opening day beginning 11:30 a.m. Only 3 cars in the parking lot speaks well for local interest. I didn’t wait.

Liberty Square Parking Structure

Two venues, Hill Auditorium and Rackam emptying out about the same time. Liberty Square Parking Garage with one pre-pay machine out of order, one elevator not working, long lines at pay machine and elevator, and floors of cars waiting to exit the lot. Solution: re-charge every car which did not reach the exit machine within 15 minutes resulting in an additional bottleneck and wait and assurance that few would exit in the allotted time.

Liberty & Main

Thirteen Smart Cars lined up on the northwest corner of Liberty and Main at half as many meters. Parking enforcement officer apparently OK. No tickets issued. Cars are part of a Smart Car Rally meeting for lunch at Lena. Lena closed for the private party until 4 p.m.

UPS truck bounces horizontally from curb to curb in order to execute a U-turn and exit the wrong way out of a one-way street. Happy to see he had to wait quite a few minutes for traffic to clear and allow him out. He would have saved time going around the block in the right direction.

Friday about 1:30 p.m. Crow harassing a pair of red tail hawks. Soaring, diving, wing to wing. Lots of commotion, but an element of play on a mild sunny day.

5 p.m. Santa and Scrooge with a dozen supporters. Santa’s wish list includes no cuts to Social Security and Medicare, higher taxes for the rich. Scrooge’s says more money for the already rich and tax the poor. One participant says, “The Fiscal Cliff isn’t a cliff. It’s a bluff.”

W. Liberty Street

Cast iron drain covers and grates pulled and set along the curb on Liberty. Made by the East Jordon Iron Works. One sports a cast fish (maybe a lake trout) and the words, “Dump No Waste.” East Jordon Iron Works now calling itself EJ has been in business since 1883 in Oak Park, Mich. I could not find a date on the pieces I looked at, but I did take a nice rubbing of the fish.
