At dusk on Aug. 4, a larger American bittern was stalking and catching fish and taking short flights over the pond.

Brown with white spots or streaks on its back. Long neck and pointed bill, but not as long or sharp as that of the great blue.

While I was trying to identify it, a heron swooped down from above the oak trees and began stalking, catching, and swallowing goldfish.
