An hour spent watching pre-dawn skies results in the sighting of a few small meteors. It was cold and clear. Weather forecasts make further sightings doubtful – this Leonid meteor shower peeks Nov. 18.

The North Taurids actually peaked last night this year! They tend to not be very impressive – only 5-6 an hour but they have a history for nice fireballs.

The Leonids peak on the 17th/18th and are much more impressive. A few of the models predict around 20/hr, some are saying 130-140/hr, and one model predicts a storm of 1000+/hr. The predictions, while improving, are always interesting to see if they wind up being accurate or not.

I have a camera that monitors the sky up in darker skies in Lapeer, MI. Here’s a capture of a small fireball at 02:16:19 on November 11th: [photo of fireball]
