Hollywood Video’s owner, Movie Gallery Inc., filed for bankruptcy in early February, and maybe one-third (?) of the stores nationwide are being closed. At the Stadium Blvd. outlet, staff told me that Stadium would be the only Hollywood Video store left in Ann Arbor.

The video-rental storefront business is being devoured by Netflix, online streaming options, and the new rental kiosks such as Redbox. In 3-5 years it’s likely there will be no big rental stores left, just as today there are no big CD stores left. Next: big bookstores?
