So I’m leaving work at Acme Mercantile, and there’s David Zinn outside crouched by the water bowl [drawing a chalk picture of a puppy]. It was just starting to rain – I’m so thrilled that I got to see it before it washed away. [photo]

I know you meant your comment as a light response but since you are a teacher there is an aspect of your comment that I feel must be addressed.

It is so easy for people to say they cannot draw but most of that is because they do not try. Drawing, like any art, requires practice. Yes, some have more aptitude for one, or another, art but those who may not be identified as ‘natural’ artists can still produce wonderful products. Actually I might argue that no matter your aptitude for the art, if you are not really struggling to push your art, on any level, that it becomes uninteresting. Conversely, and again without regard for your natural abilities, if your DO struggle and persist, you will be rewarded with interesting products. Many artists, and teachers of the arts, agree that it is the struggle that makes great art and not simply the craft associated with that art.

I could easily spring from this to the Art Fair but I will not.

    Untalented? I think not.

There was a recent article by Adam Gopnik on this subject in the New Yorker (unfortunately behind a paywall online, [link]) – the issue was June 27, 2011 and is probably still available in the library.
