Steady lunchtime crowd on opening day for Babo Market on Washington and Division. A mix of students, suits and Googlers from across the street. Constant roving free samples for those in attendance.

    Not quite a grocery store, but definitely has a deli (meat and prepared foods); produce; fresh bread; limited boxed items like pasta; dairy case, including ice cream.

    All the items are not in yet either but it is probably at 80%.

    It is upscale/expensive, but I think there is demand for this.

    Wine license to come later, so right now the wet bar is coffee only, served via drip, a la Comet Coffee in the arcade.

    I’m surprised it’s open so soon, I thought it was yet months away. Can’t say I’ll be going there, but I don’t haunt that area either, it seems like a good fit and a necessary business. An ordinary bodega would tend to be a dirty disorganized place, I don’t think that will happen here, and don’t knock the prices, considering the rents in the neighborhood, there is no choice but to be high. I say good luck, and long life to Babo.
