    Sorry, I think it is a magnolia bud – also a sign of spring.

    It was small (just under an inch) and also fuzzy, and I’ve never seen magnolias blooming in that location. So I think it is one of the many types of willows, I don’t know which. Magnolia buds are normally much larger in my experience, and not fuzzy. But someone who knows trees better than I do could go and verify.

    There *are* some magnolia trees in West Park close to Chapin Street.

    And many magnolia buds are fuzzy I just learned. Well if the buds are killed by the freezing night temperatures, I guess I’ll find out the answer soon. But the reddish bark still seems more like willow than magnolia. But my expertise is in weeds, medicinal plants, and especially not with IDing winter trees. I find that very chalenging except for the very obvious ones.
