UM: Financial Aid
The New York Times publishes a column by Jack Kadden, who reports on a recent College Board panel in New York City about financial aid and college enrollment. One of the panelists was Pamela Fowler, UM’s director of financial aid, who said the economic downturn really hit the university hard this year. Her office has set up a $6 million reserve to help incoming freshmen, and overall, UM has awarded about $800 million in total aid this fall, a $200 million increase. Says Fowler: “It takes a toll on you when your staff is having problems with mortgages and their spouses losing jobs” and they are dealing with parents with similar problems. [Source]
