Looks like the kind of work referenced in the feature article “Green Alleys” in this .pdf [link]
I stopped on my bike to chat with the two researchers, who gave a brief explanation and said “it’s a little late in the year,” but expressed a commendable zeal to gather more data. I asked if I could take their picture and they both immediately backed out of the frame. But I was pleased in any event to see what I now know is the “Green Alley” bike out in the urban wild.
