Among the pretzel-makers in the basement of Bethlehem United is Jim Lutz, whose family owned the iconic Quality Bakery on Main Street. [photo] He was a good sport when I asked him to autograph my bag of pretzels – because small business owners, past and present, are rock stars! [photo]

Quality Bakery, you say? My mother is nearing 70, born & raised in Ann Arbor, and is desperate to find a recipe (or approximation) for the “long john” filling. I’ve scoured the internet with no results. Is there any chance that The Chronicle might investigate this with Mr. Lutz? I’m sure there are plenty of folks that would love to experience these again.
Re. recipe for “long john” filling: I’ll see what I can find out!
There are no doubt plenty of folks that would love to experience a number of Quality Bakery items again, starting with me and a group of lifelong Ann Arbor friends who recently had a mouth-watering Quality Bakery discussion over lunch. I hope Mr. Lutz has a stash of recipes he’s willing to share!
