RR Bridge at Washington

Stopped. Watched. icon

Pedaling through the intersection of Washington and Third heading into downtown, I noticed a Greyhound bus turning off Huron onto Third Street, then east on Washington past the Y. As I pedaled under the RR bridge, I wondered: How tall is the bus behind me? I stopped on the far side of the bridge. Bus had stopped short of it, backed up, was attempting a turnaround maneuver using 415 W. Washington parking lot. [photo]

I used to live near there. My whole house would shake when a truck hit the bridge, which happened about once every month or two. That bridge is very solidly built.

A few years ago, my office was in the Allmendinger Building just a few dozen feet from the bridge. I used to take pictures of the aftermath of a truck vs. bridge incident and post them on my old website. [link]

Glad to know the Greyhound drivers are smart enough to turn around!

In the morning I saw a greyhound driver turning east onto Washington at 1st and s/he was having a hard time because of the construction vehicle in front of the new apartments. It ran over an orange construction barrel which stayed wedged under the bus as it drove away.

I wonder if these bus drivers didn’t get the message about the old depot being torn down and were trying to figure out where to go. (I’m still sad about the bus depot coming down, but that’s another matter.)
