UM: Research
The Detroit Free Press reports on UM’s major breakthrough in stem cell research – creating the state’s first embryonic stem cell line. Gary Smith, a researcher who derived the line, says, “This is going from zero to 50 (m.p.h.).” In the past few days, scientists noticed that the embryonic cells continued to multiply, while staying in their embryonic state. “We’re almost teaching ourselves,” Smith said. “No one here has done that – derived their own stem cell lines.” The news coincides with Sunday’s start of the World Stem Cell Summit in Detroit.
