A not uncommon attitude among taxs, movers, post office & parcel/pizza/sandwich delivery people. They double park or obstruct bicycle lanes with impunity. The taxis treat the bike lane in front of Hill Auditorium as a cab stand. Calls to the police are akin to shouting at a wall.
Unfortunately, the bike lane in front of Hill is also marked as a taxi stand. That annoys me to.
In the case of this taxi, it was completely blocking northbound traffic on State during a busy time. The driver dropped someone off, then got out to go somewhere in no rush. He then yelled at the cars trying to get around him, saying “Hazards!” (referring to his hazard lights being on). There was no way for traffic to safely go around him though.
Last Thursday, the city council gave final approval to some changes to the city’s taxicab ordinance. [link] Among other items, the changes give the city administrator a bit more latitude to suspend an individual taxicab driver’s license, if it’s the city administrator’s view that a driver “has acted in an unprofessional, harassing or threatening manner to passengers, or others.”
There are a few ‘taxis’ that operate under a ‘limousine license’ and aren’t really taxis, but work like them. Many of them are irresponsible. Also, you have some new cabbies in town that haven’t a clue where they are going. Politeness is lost on a lot of these new cabbies. Hopefully city council addresses this BS in a meaningful way. I’d suggest getting the cab # & company name and making a complaint. If such complaints show a pattern, then the city can take action.
