Monroe Street Fair: Temporary Street Closing

Fair held on April 4; UM request for permanent closing likely

Inadvertently omitted from the report on the last city council meeting was a resolution authorizing the closing of Monroe Street between Oakland and Tappan Avenue for the Monroe Street Fair. The fair takes place from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, 2009. This is a section of the street that runs directly in front of Dominick’s.

Commenting briefly on the resolution before voting, councilmember Sabra Briere said that she was happy to vote for the temporary closing of Monroe Street. This was likely an allusion to a proposal that the University of Michigan will likely bring before the city’s planning commission in the next few months, which would permanently close Monroe Street on a section adjacent to the fair’s location. The section of the street that UM would like to make a part of its campus is between Oakland and State streets. Previous coverage by The Chronicle of the proposal can be found here or here.

Gotta wonder — is this connected to Hash Bash, which is the same day?
